Product Description
The Dual-Band Wireless-N Gigabit Router is really four devices in one. There's the dual-band Wireless Access Point, which lets you connect to the network without wires. There's also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100/1000 Switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices together at up to gigabit speeds. The Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection. There is also a Storage Link that lets you easily add gigabytes of storage space onto your network using readily available USB 2.0 hard drives or plug in a USB flash disk for a convenient way to access your portable data files. The built-in Media Server streams music, video, and photos from the attached storage device to any UPnP compatible media adapter. The Access Point built into the Router uses a dual-band version of the very latest wireless networking technology, Wireless-N (draft 802.11n). By overlaying the signals of multiple radios for each band, Wireless-N's Multiple In, Multiple Out (MIMO) technology multiplies the effective data rate. Unlike ordinary wireless networking technologies that are confused by signal reflections, MIMO actually uses these reflections to increase its range and reduce Dead Spots in the wireless coverage area. To help protect your data and privacy, the Router can encode all wireless transmissions with industrial-strength 256-bit encryption. Security features - WEP - WPA - WPA2 Security key bits - Up to 256-bit encryption System Requirements - Internet Explorer 6.0 or Firefox 1.0, CD-ROM drive, Windows 98 SE, ME, 2000, XP and Vista, and Network Adapter Dimensions - 7.48 x 5.71 x 7.01 (190x145x178mm) Weight - 1.51 pounds (683 grams)
User Reviews:
G Band Killer!
I've been using Linksys (Now Cisco) products since the begining. My older G band was well beyound its life cycle. This router ROCKS, I get 6.0 MPS speed on my N band capable laptop, and am sustaining more connections. Haven't seen the range increase promissed, but it is more than adequate for my 1/3rd acre yard. I have recommended this router to my friends and co-workers
Linksys Wrt600N is working Windows XP Pro
Product came fast. Thank you!!! It did have a problem with connecting to internet during CD installation. But i remember having similar problem with others. I simply continued and then exited program. I shut everything down and repluged it all in. Worked fine. Should be easier way to help customers to just ignore a connection failure and finish installing the router.
Fast - but awkward to set up
dual networks very good but set up has not been easy (generally I can find my way around diffiecult computer issues) so the rather poor linksys network admin software may be better to avoid
Malfunctioning unit, horrible tech support
After not using linksys products for several years due to declining quality and tech support, I decided to try them again. I hoped that their acquisition by cisco would raise the standard. I found that nothing changed. This top of the line router could not establish a connection with either of 2 laptops wirelessly on the 2.4ghz band (this was not a problem with the belkin router I was replacing). I spent hours with linksys tech support on the phone. The tech offered random recommendations, until he admitted he did not know the product in detail. I will never buy a linksys product again.
Up and down
I bought this router with the dma2100 media center extender (I have posted a review for the DMA2100). I was "upgrading" from the WRT300N to this router as it seemed like a good deal for gigabit networking and the extra USB port for a storage link. I never used the storage link option as I spent most of my time dealing with the router's "hiccups". The main hiccup I encountered was DNS resolution. I could see the machines in the DHCP client list, but could not ping by name. Therefore, if a drive was mapped on one of the machines on the network, the mapping sometimes failed on system startup. The other issue I had was occasionally, an IP address conflict would occur on the network. All machines/devices on the network were set to use DHCP. The wireless networking was set to not broadcast the SSID, with MAC address filtering enabled, WPA2 + AES encryption and a strong key, so I kinda doubt that someone else was using the network, though I admit it's not impossible. And last, a minor gripe about the pages that are displayed following a setting change to the router setup. It always seemed that the times it displayed that it would refresh after a setting change were too short.

I have returned this unit to Amazon and have "downgraded" back to the WRT300N, which is working like a champ. I don't quite get the speed on my laptop that I did with the WRT600N, but the reliability is worth it.

As a side note, I did ensure that the latest firmware for both the WRT600N (1.01.36 build 3 at the time) and DMA2100 (not sure what version for the extender as is downloaded by extender utility) was downloaded and installed before I set up my network, so getting the latest firmware wouldn't solve the issues. IMO, Linksys seriously needs to release a firmware update to the WRT600N.
